How Do You Prefer To Play An FPS/RTS?
Well the question is simple, do you hate playing a First Person Shooter (FPS) with a mouse and keyboard but love the feel of an Xbox 360 controller or PS3 etc? Or possibly it’s the other way around, or maybe neither.
I personally prefer the Xbox controller over any other controller because of the overall feel of it and button layout, sure it varies with the different games in-game button layout but regardless it stays the same, left trigger to aim down you sights or throw a grenade, right trigger to shoot then right bumper to reload, pretty simple stuff.
On the other hand you have the mouse and keyboard, in my opinion relatively a lot easier to aim with to a certain degree but the movement/action keys on a keyboard is shockingly awkward to play with even if I calibrate the buttons to do what I want them to do. The typical WASD keys for running around is great and all, but reloading/crouching? Ehh, can’t stand it.
Is it one of those things that people just adapt to due to playing with it extensively or is it just preference? Just another thing to consider in this post is the Real Time Strategy (RTS) genre, I have asked many of my friends on the Xbox whom I play Command and Conquer Kanes Wrath or Red Alert 3/BFME 2 with, all argue that the Xbox is superior to the computer when it comes to RTS, I am honestly dumb-founded that they would say that.
Here’s why:
1) The Keyboard provides so many more ways to group units to make micromanaging way easier.
2) The Keyboard has about 48 keys which can all be configured to actions such as building a specific unit, building a specific building/structure or selecting a specific building/unit so on so fourth. The Xbox has about 6 different buttons to achieve this, what gives?
3) The mouse is so much more easier to navigate around the map/game area than the analog sticks. The typical way to move your camera to a certain location in an instant on computer is to click the spot on the mini-map. The Xbox equivalent? Hold down a button to bring up the mini-map, then navigate to the location with the analog sticks then finally press the action button.
Maybe it’s just me or maybe it’s not, either way, I would love to here how other people prefer to play their FPS or RTS games, so comment I guess.
