What Games Keep You Going?

January 21, 2010 at 10:21 am (Normal post)

This post is really just here to give you an idea of what games I tend to play, and to give you an idea on what I think about gaming for lengthy periods of time.

Well, many gamers out there would have certainly played a Pokemon game or maybe a Kingdom Hearts game or definitely some other variation of an RPG Genre or MMO and most will notice that, whilst playing these games you manage to rack up massive amounts of Gameplay time, generally called “hours”.

I personally have clocked over 300 hours of Pokemon (probably more) and almost, if not, 600 hours on a single Monster Hunter game. So I am curious, what games keep you going and why? To me, most First Person Shooters (if not all) I only continue to play because of the ability to connect and play with your other friends or to compete with other players all around the world for just a small price. I’m sure some readers will argue that the price for some online games are expensive and I can agree with most on that point, but in reality, you get what you pay for.

I’m a big fan of Real Time Strategy games especially Warcraft 3 :TFT, Age of Empires 3 and LOTR BFME 2, all three of these games are exceptionally good in their own ways and each are unique, but for me, it’s all about the Online. Is it because of the Genre of the game? Or is it because of the era games have reached?

However, quite a few games that don’t have Online can still be played for extensive hours. Fallout 3, Assassins Creed, Bioshock and Star Wars: KOTOR are all perfectly good examples in my opinion, I would put Oblivion on that terribly small list, but I cannot stand the game. The thing that each of these games have in common is simple, Exploration, customization and in-depth story telling. Each of the games listed there put the player in the world and lets them run free, it lets them become part of a world and be able to say “That is my character, it’s how I wanted it and I can do what I want (to a certain degree) in the world I am playing in.”

From what I have said, I haven’t come to a conclusion of what games rule the roost when it comes to lengthy gaming times, I have simply put down my thoughts on a small matter. The games listed in this post I have all played and enjoyed to a certain degree, some I like more then others but they are all great games. Also, obviously (well I hope so) the games I spoke about aren’t the only games I have played relating to the Genre etc, they are just small examples of what I was talking about.

So the question I would like to ask you is: “What games do you or have you played for many hours and why?”

Hey Sniper. I saw this in the GMC and decided to contribute.

Unlike you, I mostly enjoy single player adventure games (it is sometimes a pity as many people don’t play my games then, because they just don’t enjoy that type of thing). I usually play these games once, but sometimes there is something that makes me play twice. Generally, I am a sucker for environments, effects, and ambient music. This can be found, for example, in the Metroid games, especially the recent ones such as Metroid Prime.

A good story can also lead to me playing twice, or hidden items. Sometimes even different difficulties. For example, I played Iji 4 times, and enjoyed every single time :)

I also enjoy the occasional creative arcade game, such as ChevyRay’s Skullpogo. It’s fun to pick these up and play for a few minutes before getting to work on anything.

Well, that’s my two cents. Have a good one :)

By the way, I’ll be back to check if you replied.

Also, I should have included this before, but I’m really pumped for the GMCG because it looks like it would be one of those games I really enjoy playing.

I too enjoy Single Player games as well as Multiplayer games, it’s just in most cases I will only complete 2 runs of the game(3 at max) then put it away and probably never play it again, or at least not for a while that is. I totally agree with what you said about how a good story will lead or can lead to you playing a game again. In most cases thats the same for me, but really only if the Level design was somewhat amazing and also if the protagonist is interesting enough.

But it really depends on the game, Fallout 3 for example, it’s Single player, has great downloadable content and an interesting setting. I enjoy the game immensely and the thing that keeps me attached to it is the ability to go where-ever I want, when ever I want and thats it in a nutshell.

Sorry if the reply is late, it doesn’t seem late, it is on the same day but I had comments set to “Approve by Admin”, and I was fortunate enough to log into the Admin Dashboard and get a notice of your comments. Anyways, thanks for the comments and be sure to look out for a new post, more then likely some time tomorrow. :)

That’s true, I guess I was also referring to level design when I said ‘environment.’ I also agree with you on the protagonist angle.

        ….
Oh no, now look what you made me do. I’ll have to rework the protagonist of my game. Haha :)
